In Ayurveda the concept of using only one herb for the purpose of treatment or as health supplements is very rapidly spreading
allover the world. Now days the single drugs or herbs are very widely use by doctors as well as patients as health supplement.
This concept is also described in the ayurveda related text. This is the first step in the standardization of the drugs and medicines.
In the ancient times the Ayurveda Physicians were dealing in the disease management by using single drugs.
This is very well described in the Charak samhita.This was the beginning of the standardization of the medicinal drugs.
The ayurvedic pharmacy developed from this single drug uses to multiple combinations in due course of time.
The dose determination and use of drugs after testing on the animals was the unique feature of ayurveda.
The ayurveda related texts states that the drugs must be tested on the crow, sparrow, cuckoo, peacock, dog, cat, and monkey etc.
SINGLE HERBS
★ 1. AMALAKI (EMBELICA OFFECINALIS)
Antioxidant, Hypolipidemic, Antibacterial, Antiviral, Antacid,
Digestive & Blood Purifier.
★ 2. ASHWAGANDHA(WITHANIA SOMNIFERA)
Ashwagandha enhances sexual power, prevent impotency & seminal debility , Ashwagandha acts against Arthritis and Rheumatism , in case of cancer acts as an
adjuvant,also used in general debility, aging, stress induced disorders, anxiety neurosis,insomnia.
★ 3. LASHUNA(ALLIUM SATIVUM)
Effective in hypercholesterolaemia and atherosclerosis(Garlic may prevent blood clots and destroy plaque
preventing atherosclerosis.) , anti-bacterial, anti-fungal,digestive aid and anti-viral properties,
relieves nausea, gas colic, flatulence, belching and heaviness,also used to kill parasites such as hookworms and pinworms,
Garlic is useful for increasing sexual energy.
★ 4. GUDUCHI(TINOSPORA CORDIFOLIA)
Guduchi strengthens anti-infective response , builds the body's resistance to infections ,improves the immune system.
Guduchi is anti-pyretic and act as a tonic after fever, also has action against alternative fever like Malaria.
Guduchi acts as a memory booster, as a diuretic & also regarded as a liver protector.
★ 5. NEEM (AZADIRACTA INDICA)
Having blood-purifying properties indicated in eczema, ringworm and scabies,
Very effective anthelmintic in ascariasis. Has anti-carcinogenic effect, used as an antineoplastic and as antiviral also useful against diabetes.
Also mosquito larvicidal.Neem Extract have been shown to reduce clotting, lower blood pressure and cholesterol,
slow rapid heartbeat and inhibit irregularities of the rhythms of the heart.
★ 6. BRAHMI (BACOPA MONNERI)
Brahmi is useful for improving mental abilities, confidence and memory recall.
For these uses of Brahmi, it has been widely used by students.
Indian studies have also shown Brahmi to possess anticancer activity.
Brahmi is effective against diseases like bronchitis, asthma, hoarseness, arthritis, rheumatism, backache,
constipation, hair loss, fevers, digestive problems etc.
Research has shown that Brahmi has Antioxidant, Cardiotonic and Anticancer properties.
★ 7. HARIDRA(CURCUMA LONGA)
It is useful in skin infections having anti-allergic & anti-inflammatory actions.
Also useful in joint related concerns,helps to maintain a normal cholesterol and a healthy heart.
Very helpful as a digestive support & extremely helpful in liver protection.
Curcumin is also used in controling obesity.
